Founded in 1985 by pioneering dance educationist Nadine Senior MBE (1939-2016), NSCD offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees and has since gone on to produce some of the leading names in the world of contemporary dance today. Alumni include the internationally celebrated Akram Khan (1998), independent choreographer Gary Clarke (2001), and Tamsin Fitzgerald (1998), founder and artistic director of 2Faced Dance Company.  </span></span></span></p> <p class="Body"><span><span><span>While living in England for three years, D’Arcy completed a master's degree, taught dance, performed, and presented her own original works of choreography. During this time, she noted similarities and contrasts between contemporary dance practices in the United Kingdom and United States. After returning to the United States in 2012, D’Arcy remained determined to maintain those connections and open international doors for her students. A promising pilot program at the University of Utah in 2014 gave D’Arcy the chance to test the idea of a dance exchange with NSCD. Now, as a professor in George Mason’s School of Dance, she has brought this exceptional opportunity to dance students and faculty here in Virginia. </span></span></span></p> <p class="Body"><span><span><span>Innovation is at the core of the partnership with a central component being the robust exchange of knowledge, ideas, and cultures. Students in the class will explore the work of UK-based contemporary dance companies and choreographers, as well as take part in dialogues with NSCD faculty and students who will attend some sessions via Zoom. The course will allow for introspection, reflection, and discussion among George Mason students as they draw connections between contemporary dance practices in the United States and the UK. </span></span></span></p> <p class="Body"><span><span><span>Beyond the class structure, D’Arcy plans to pair students from both schools to encourage one-on-one relationship-building and conversations about their future plans and personal experiences as emerging professionals in their field. In its 1942 debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, it’s claimed that curtain call lasted 17 to 23 minutes from an uproarious standing ovation. Telling a classic American story of cowboys and true love, de Mille’s <em>Rodeo</em> impressed two audience members in particular, composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who invited de Mille to collaborate during the creation of their latest musical, <em>Oklahoma!</em> Thus, de Mille also then created “Laurey Makes Up Her Mind,” <em>Oklahoma!</em>’s 18-minute dream ballet sequence that classic musical lovers have come to know and enjoy.  </p> <figure class="quote" lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Interested in learning more about the revolutionary <em>Rodeo</em>? This personal experience inspired the high-energy propulsive work set to club beats, which features an ensemble of eight dancers. The association and its conferences serve as vital platforms for promoting excellence, fostering collaboration, and advancing the visibility of Black dance within the broader dance community and society.  </p> <p>The association holds significant importance as a prominent organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the contributions of Black dance artists and professionals. Mason students who participated include first-year to senior Dance majors. </p> <p>“This is the first time that Mason’s School of Dance has ever gone to an IABD conference, so I’m really grateful and excited to be a part of that,” said sophomore dance major Sanaa Fairley. </p> <p>Their performance, which was part of the Youth and College Artists Performance “Love for the Rhythm,” was choreographed by senior Brianna Dawkins.  </p> <p>“It was extremely important for me because it was my first time representing myself as a professional choreographer,” said Dawkins, who is an arts management minor. </p> <p>The conference gave students opportunities to showcase their skills and network with current professionals in their field. </p> <p>After their performance, the Mason students received invitations to audition for different dance companies, said Dawkins. “That was really amazing because we all walked out of the theater with these new opportunities,” Dawkins said. </p> <p>“There are so many valuable experiences like classes and panels held by masters in their field,” said Fairley.  For example, the students all took a West African dance class that was offered to attendees. “That [class] was really grounding and allowed me as an artist to see what inspiration I could pull from other people and cultures.” </p> <p>“We really tried to soak up as much knowledge as we could, especially as younger dancers learning from our older peers and making those connections.” </p> <p>The students compared the conference atmosphere to a family reunion.  </p> <p>“I saw people that I've danced with in previous summer intensives and reconnected with teachers that I've trained with. I also met directors of companies which is important for potential future jobs,” said Dawkins. </p> <p>This performance was freshman Jaelyn Perkins’ first at an IABD conference as a college student. </p> <p>“It was amazing to be able to share that space with so many Black artists and having that sense of community. There are endless accessible opportunities for Black dancers at this conference,” said Perkins.  </p> <p>Mason's dance program contributes to these experiences by consistently facilitating connections between students and professionals in the industry, said Jackson. Throughout the academic year, students are routinely exposed to opportunities within the field, such as networking events and internships. </p> <p>“Through my experiences here at Mason, there are so many professional opportunities like this conference. I felt so empowered being around so many successful Black dancers,” said sophomore dance major T’aja Williams. “It was a constant reminder of what my capability can look like and the possibility of being successful.” </p> <p>Overall, the trip was a huge success, Jackson said.  </p> <p>“I would love to make it an annual or biennial trip. The School of Dance maintains a commitment to providing enriching experiences that align with the educational mission of the dance program and I think attendance at IABD helps facilitate that commitment,” he said. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/206" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA)</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/221" hreflang="en">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/201" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/811" hreflang="en">black artists</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/951" hreflang="en">networking</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 14 Feb 2024 19:55:01 +0000 Shayla Brown 946 at https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu Mason Artist-in-Residence A.I.M by Kyle Abraham Leads Events Across Campus and Community https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/news/2024-01/mason-artist-residence-aim-kyle-abraham-leads-events-across-campus-and-community <span>Mason Artist-in-Residence A.I.M by Kyle Abraham Leads Events Across Campus and Community</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/416" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Zoe Harr</span></span> <span>Mon, 01/08/2024 - 15:40</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--70-30"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq201/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-01/kyle-abraham.jpg?itok=7hyVLYTR" width="350" height="350" alt="Kyle Abraham" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>A.I.M by Kyle Abraham performs at the Center on February 17. Choreographed by renowned instructor <a href="/profiles/sboyleda">Shaun D'Arcy</a> and inspired by the mysteries of space and human aspiration, AURORA became a canvas for the sophomore class to explore their creative boundaries. </p> <p>"What a joy it was to choreograph a new dance for our talented sophomore class. The work, titled AURORA, came about following a visit I made to the Air and Space Museum this summer. Inspired by stories of flight and recent telescopic images of outer space, I hoped to capture the wonder, magic, and limits of human aspiration and worlds as of yet unexplored. It was a pleasure to share AURORA with an audience and watch our exceptional dancers take flight!" Shares D'Arcy. </p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq201/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-01/dance_-_aurora.png?itok=NWLYmAft" width="350" height="249" alt="Dance students performing Aurora" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Sophomore students from Mason's School of Dance performing on November 3 and 4, 2023.<br /> Photo Credit: Jessie Ferguson</figcaption></figure><p>T'aja Williams, part of the sophomore troupe, vividly remembers the initial excitement. "It was truly a blessing to be considered, challenged, and expressed through my role in Aurora," they recall. The project, for T'aja, was about translating personal experiences into the performance's broader themes. "Hope, destiny, and the instinct to believe in the 'good' helped me fulfill my role in Aurora," she reflects. </p> <p>The project's announcement sparked enthusiasm for dancer Emma Simmons, especially given the chance to work with choreographer Shaun D'Arcy. "When I found out T'aja was the lead role and I was her official understudy, I felt so much gratitude and excitement," Emma shares. Shaun's approach pushed them to continuously evolve physically and emotionally, deepening their connection with the piece. </p> <p>Sanaa Fairley also found AURORA to be a challenge of physicality. "I often found myself reaching new limits and breaking them constantly," Sanaa states. They prepared strategically, utilizing rest and meditation to manage the demands of rehearsals and performances. </p> <p>Kalen Simpson emphasizes the demanding rehearsal process. "One of the most memorable moments was when we all got into a circle and screamed together," Kalen remembers. This moment of shared energy illustrates the strong camaraderie among the dancers, crucial to the success of AURORA. </p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq201/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2024-01/screenshot_2024-01-03_at_10.19.50_am.png?itok=XAdiYi8k" width="350" height="258" alt="Dance students performing Aurora" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Sophomore students from Mason's School of Dance performing on November 3 and 4, 2023.<br /> Photo Credit: Jessie Ferguson</figcaption></figure><p>Being a dance student at George Mason University is about immersing oneself in an environment that mirrors professional dance life. The intensity of their schedules, filled with rehearsals and performances, forges a close-knit community among the dancers. Emma highlights this unity, "The camaraderie among the dancers in AURORA is what made it so successful." Supporting each other, especially during demanding times, reflects the school's spirit. </p> <p>Adaptability and resilience were key lessons learned, especially when facing unexpected challenges like injuries. Kalen explains, "We learned to adapt material quickly in case of any absences." This flexibility is a skill the dancers will carry into their future careers. </p> <p>Reflecting on the AURORA experience, the dancers recognize its profound impact on their growth as artists. They've learned about collaboration, persistence, and self-expression. "This experience will live on with me for the confidence it gave me as a performer, artist, and person," Sanaa articulates, a sentiment shared by their peers. </p> <p>AURORA transcends being a mere performance; it encapsulates the life of a dance student at George Mason University's School of Dance. Here, students develop as dancers and individuals, learning about teamwork, resilience, and the joy of exploration. AURORA's journey, from inception to stage, mirrors the university's diverse, supportive, and dynamic community, truly embodying its "All Together Different" philosophy. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/201" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 03 Jan 2024 15:11:19 +0000 Lakin Raybuck 921 at https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu How George Mason University became a draw for the biggest names in contemporary dance https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/news/2023-10/how-george-mason-university-became-draw-biggest-names-contemporary-dance <span>How George Mason University became a draw for the biggest names in contemporary dance</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/496" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Katarina Benson</span></span> <span>Thu, 10/19/2023 - 16:08</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/kreedy" hreflang="und">Karen Reedy</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Read more in </span></span></span></span></span></span><em><a href="https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ft.e2ma.net%2Fclick%2Fenss2r%2Fagohwubb%2Fen0q6p&amp;data=05%7C01%7Ckbenson8%40gmu.edu%7C99f7ccc1570b42b0727708dbd08f54ee%7C9e857255df574c47a0c00546460380cb%7C0%7C0%7C638333086256742032%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=gVMv6GAadXP3yVaWoTMEDEMryIfe%2FjVT3Nc%2BdxWA8RY%3D&amp;reserved=0"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dance Magazine</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></a>. </em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/906" hreflang="en">In the Media</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/201" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 19 Oct 2023 20:08:58 +0000 Katarina Benson 911 at https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater ‘awakens’ School of Dance students at Mason’s 2023 Gala Concert https://dance.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/news/2023-04/alvin-ailey-american-dance-theater-awakens-school-dance-students-masons-2023-gala <span>Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater ‘awakens’ School of Dance students at Mason’s 2023 Gala Concert </span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/476" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Shayla Brown</span></span> <span>Fri, 04/07/2023 - 11:16</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/kreedy" hreflang="und">Karen Reedy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/ljackson" hreflang="en">Lawrence M.
