Stepping into the Spotlight
Dance majors are on stage early and often, where they learn the important, intangible elements that can't be fully taught in a studio.
Working with guest artists, faculty, and students, dance majors have many opportunities to mature as a performing artist. The campus community and the public enjoy concerts on our most intimate stage and on our grandest.
Each year, students have more than 20 performance opportunities. The School of Dance presents five professionally produced performances and two informal showcases, as well as several choreographic showcases each year. The Dance Gala Concert is the Mason Dance Company’s crowning season event featuring a program of works by contemporary professional choreographers. A lot of your time could be spent in the wings, which is where we think a dancer should be.
Guest artists, faculty and student choreographers create works for which dance majors are expected to audition at every opportunity. Choreographers schedule two-hour rehearsals twice weekly, and most rehearsals are scheduled weekday evenings or weekend afternoons. Dancers who are cast may register for performance credit.
