Mason's School of Dance has been making the news lately. In March, during their crowning season event, the Dance Gala, senior Lauren Stucko performed the principal role of the Pink Girl three times, in Lar Lubovitch’s signature work, A Brahms Symphony (1985). This is the exact same role that her teacher, and director of the School of Dance, Susan Shields, performed hundreds of times during her own career and it is therefore close to her heart. She says, "The audience loves it. It’s got everything—love and grief and loss and every metaphysical and existential feeling you can possibly have brought into one dance.”
Now, this weekend, a select group of Mason dancers have accepted an invitation from Lubovitch to close out the Lar Lubovitch 50th-anniversary season with another performance of A Brahms Symphony on April 22 at the Joyce Theater in New York. It's such a big deal that Mason's college president, Angel Cabrera, likened it to when the basketball team made it to the NCAA Final Four. The Mason dancers will be in good company along with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Joffrey Ballet.
